I was chatting with a friend, and she was saying that she’s not unhappy, but she’s not happy either.
I think many of us feel that way as adults because there are so many “have to’s” in our lives that the “want to’s” get pushed aside.
Let’s talk about ways to get into alignment with your true self when you’re feeling “off.”
Secret #1: Meditation
Many people feel like they can’t meditate. This feeling comes from a misconception that meditating means thought-free.
Meditation is really the act of noticing when your mind starts to wander and bringing it back — not keeping it quiet the entire time.
The best way to start meditating is to start by focusing on your breath.
Find a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably (you can sit on a chair, on the floor, or on the bed, you don’t have to sit in lotus lol).
Set a timer for 5 minutes.
Close your eyes and inhale for a count of 4.
Hold that breath for a count of 4, then exhale for a count of 8.
Continue to do this until your timer goes off.
If your mind starts to wander, go back to counting your breaths.
Be kind to yourself.
Secret #2: Journaling
Journaling can be a fantastic habit to pick up.
Journaling helps you to get those thoughts out of your head and onto paper.
There’s a practice called Morning Pages where you sit down first thing in the morning and write three pages of whatever is going through your mind.
The idea is that you get all the junk out of your head so that the real ideas and thoughts can come through.
Journaling doesn’t have to be three pages every day though, it can be just a few sentences about your goals for the day or the dreams you had last night.
Journaling is just a way to communicate with your subconscious. You never know what is going to land on the paper.
Secret #3: Pull a Tarot Card a Day
I know this one may throw you off and make you think I’m off my rocker, but tarot can be a great way to build your intuition (and give you a jumping-off point for your journaling).
For me, tarot cards are not about trying to predict the future. They are about connecting with the images on the card and seeing what ideas they spark in my mind.
Off and on for many years, I have used the practice of pulling just one tarot card a day and then focusing on what that card means to me.
I find it interesting to see the patterns over time, for example, this week every card I’ve pulled has been a Pentacle. To me, this means that my ideas are coming to fruition and are very tangible (pentacles can mean money).
When you’re just learning the meaning of tarot cards, it can be helpful to have a book to reference.
I use Biddy Tarot’s The Ultimate Guide to Tarot Card Meanings. It’s straightforward and not too woo-woo and gives me some ideas to go forward with when thinking about what that day’s card means to me.
So grab a notebook and a tarot deck and find a nice quiet spot to meditate and journal. Before long, you’ll see that your intuition is starting to communicate with you what your true self wants and needs to get back into alignment.
